Ink fingerprinting is the traditional method of capturing fingerprint impressions.  A thin layer of ink is applied to the finger, and then the finger is pressed firmly onto a fd 258 fingerprint card.  This creates a clear and detailed impression of the fingerprint ridges and patterns. 

Being fingerprinted will ultimately result in a background check either done in a particular state or nationwide as an FBI background check.
